Unreal Mandalorian

The new Star Wars spin-off show The Mandalorian uses the Unreal game engine to dynamically generate responsive backgrounds onto a LED wall behind the actors. The engine can dynamically change the perspective of the scene based on the position of the camera to create a parallax effect in real time.

Snowden On Rogen

This week, Joe Rogen published his monster interview with Edward Snowden. Poor Joe got about 6 sentences in during the almost three hour interview. In saying that, the account given by Snowden is fascinating because of the passion that he conveys when talking about what he discovered and why he decided to become a whistleblower. The conversation towards the end moves on to more up to date topics such as bulk data collection and Snowden's life in Russia.

Protect, Restore, Fund

Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot have released a short video urging us to Protect, Restore and Fund nature, one of the best tools to use against the climate crisis. They also ask us to "Vote for people who defend nature". The video was produced while having t"he tiniest environmental impact possible" according to the director.

3D Ken Burns Effect From Single Image

Researchers at Portland State University and Adobe have demonstrated being able to generate a 3D Ken Burns effect (parallax) using a single image. The system uses neural networks to generate depth predictions and object boundaries, and context aware in-painting to generate the missing pieces of the video to simluate a moving point of focus. We can tick another Star Trek TNG sci-fi concept off the list.

The Comet

Motion Designer Christian Stangl and Composer Wolfgang Stangl used the 400,000 images released by the ESA of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko taken by the Rosetta spacecraft to make a short film. The footage uses digitally enhanced real footage from the probe.

Filmmaker Mode

In the next step in the war against TV motion smoothing, top filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and James Cameron have worked with the UHD Alliance to petition and work with TV manufacturers to create a Filmmaker mode, which removes all post processing to keep the image as close to the source as possible.
