In This Edition:
Deep dive on DeepSeek, strong as steel & light as foam nano material, heat related death projections in Europe, climate adaptation capability framework, & cargo ship that captures its own exhaust Co2!

I'm a bit late to the game, but I just finished watching the excellent show Shōgun. Who knew a political thriller set in 1600s feudal Japan would be so good! I will be addressing everyone by putting -sama at the end of their name from now on.

Deep Dive On DeepSeek

Image: Exponential View

Azeem Azhar published a great piece on the Exponential View describing the new AI open source DeepSeek R1 model, how it compares to other models, and what effect it most likely will have on the AI landscape.

Strong As Steel & Light As Foam Nano Material

Image: Peter Series

Researchers at the University of Toronto and Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology used machine learning to design a nano-material that is strong as steel and light as foam and can be 3D printed at the micro and nano scale.

Heat Related Death Projections In Europe

Temperature changes across 4 climate change scenarios have been analysed to project the amount of temperature related deaths from 2015 to 2099 in 854 European cities. The paper published in Nature Medicine states that "with no adaptation to heat, the increase in heat-related deaths consistently exceeds any decrease in cold-related deaths across all considered scenarios in Europe". The projections can be seen on these maps (we are currently on track for 2.7°C)

Climate Adaptation Capability Framework

Adaptation Scotland published an updated Climate Adaptation Capability Framework handbook and starter pack, aimed and helping Scotland's public sector to identify and action climate adaptation. It provides an easy to understand framework that can be used by any organisation.

Cargo Ship That Captures Its Own Exhaust CO2

Image: Solvang

Shipping company Solvang have deployed a carbon capture system on their Clipper Eris ship that will capture up to 70% of the CO2 produced by the ship's exhaust. The system is being tested in a 2 year pilot scheme.
