Andrew Krapivin, an undergraduate student at Rutgers University disproved a 40-year-old conjecture about the efficiency of hash tables and invented a more efficient way of accessing hash tables, partly because "Krapivin was not held back by the conventional wisdom for the simple reason that he was unaware of it."
